Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan – Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan is designed to respect your privacy. Your collection of finds stays on your device. To identify a rock, the photo you choose is sent for one-time analysis to an AI vision provider, as described below. The app does not create user accounts, does not ask for your name or email, and does not sell your data.
What Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan collects
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan is developed and operated by Foster Apps LLC. Your saved finds (photos, results, notes and test answers) are stored only on your device.
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan does not:
- Sell your data.
- Track you across other apps or websites.
- Use advertising SDKs or advertising identifiers.
- Track your location.
- Require an account or email address.
- Store your photos on any Foster Apps server.
How photo identification works
When you identify a rock, each photo you choose is sent over an encrypted connection through a Foster Apps relay service to a third-party AI vision provider (Google Gemini) for one-time analysis. The relay passes the photo on and does not store it; it keeps only a random per-install identifier and request counts, to prevent abuse. Use of the AI provider is subject to Google's own privacy terms.
Results are AI-generated estimates for information and education only. They are not a valuation and not safety advice; confirm an identification with the home tests or an expert.
If you use “Report” on a result, an anonymous report with the reason you chose and the result shown is sent to Foster Apps so we can fix bad results. The photo is not included.
On-device storage
Your finds are stored locally on your device using on-device storage. They are not synced to any Foster Apps server. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data permanently removes them. When you export your collection (Pro), the file is created on your device and goes only where you choose to share it.
In-app purchases
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan offers optional Pro plans (monthly, yearly and lifetime) purchased through Google Play. Billing is handled entirely by Google; Foster Apps never sees your payment details. You can manage or cancel a subscription in the app (Settings → Manage subscription) or in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. See Google's privacy policy.
Anonymous usage and error reports
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan sends a small number of anonymous events to a Foster Apps service, such as the first time the app is opened, when an identification completes, when you reach the paywall, when a purchase completes, and when an error occurs. Error reports include the error message, technical details of where it happened, and the app version. Events are tied only to a random identifier created when you install the app. They contain no name, email, advertising identifier, location or photos, and they are used only to understand how the app is used and to fix bugs.
Deleting your data
Everything you save stays on your phone: uninstalling Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan, or clearing its data in Android Settings, permanently deletes your finds, photos and notes. Uninstalling also removes the random install identifier, so later anonymous events can no longer be linked to earlier ones. Photos sent for identification are not kept by Foster Apps. To ask about any other data, email support+rockid@fosterapps.com and we will respond within 30 days.
Children's privacy
Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app has no advertising, no accounts and no social features.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as Rock Identifier: Crystal Scan evolves. When it changes, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page is revised.
