How Many Square Feet Does a Bucket of Driveway Sealer Cover?
A 5-gallon bucket of driveway sealer covers roughly 500 square feet per coat sprayed on smooth asphalt, 400 on average pavement and 300 on rough or porous pavement. Applied by squeegee or brush, plan on about 225 to 375 square feet. Two coats halve those numbers.
Coverage per 5-gallon bucket
| Surface | Sprayed | Squeegee or brush |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth or recently sealed | 500 ft² (100 per gallon) | 375 ft² (75 per gallon) |
| Average | 400 ft² (80 per gallon) | 300 ft² (60 per gallon) |
| Rough, porous or neglected | 300 ft² (60 per gallon) | 225 ft² (45 per gallon) |
These are the figures the calculator starts from. They're planning assumptions, not a manufacturer's number: real coverage depends on your product and how it's mixed. As a check, SealMaster quotes about 100–120 square feet per gallon of its concentrate once mixed, which works out to roughly 80–105 square feet per gallon of mixed sealer at its recommended water ratio.
Why coverage varies so much
- Surface condition. Old, gray, open-textured asphalt absorbs sealer. New or recently sealed pavement is tight and takes much less.
- Application method. A squeegee or brush works material into the surface and leaves a thicker coat than a sprayer.
- Mix. Concentrate stretched with water and sand covers a different area per gallon than ready-to-use sealer. Read which one the label is quoting.
- Coat. The first coat on porous pavement soaks in; the second goes further.
Working out buckets for your driveway
- Measure the square footage: a 40 × 12 driveway is 480 ft².
- Pick the coverage from the table or your label: average pavement, sprayed, 80 ft² per gallon.
- Gallons per coat: 480 ÷ 80 = 6 gallons.
- Multiply by coats: 6 × 2 = 12 gallons.
- Buckets: 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4, so buy 3.
Common mistakes
- Reading the coverage as the whole job. Label coverage is per coat.
- Assuming every bucket is 5 gallons. Many retail pails are 4.75 gallons.
- Using concentrate coverage for mixed sealer, or the other way round.
- Sealing over cracks. Fill cracks first; sealer doesn't bridge them.
The table is a planning estimate. Your product's label and a test patch on your own pavement are the real numbers to order by.
Questions
How many buckets of sealer for a 2-car driveway?
A two-car driveway of about 20 × 40 feet is 800 square feet. On average pavement that's 10 gallons per sprayed coat, so 2 pails for one coat or 4 for two.
Is coverage per coat or for the whole job?
Per coat. A pail that covers 400 square feet in one coat covers about 200 square feet with two coats.
How much water do I add to concentrate?
Follow your product's mix design. SealMaster's MasterSeal, for example, calls for 15 to 25 gallons of water per 100 gallons of concentrate. Added water increases the volume you spread, so check whether the label's coverage is per gallon of concentrate or mixed sealer.
